What’s the point of a run coach?

Updated: Aug 6, 2024

First of all, there are so many points. Way more than would be interesting for a blog post. But here are some top reasons:

Reasons to Hire a Run Coach:

Reason #1: You want that shiny personal record (PR).

Okay so this is probably what most people think a coach is for, and for good reason. PR's can be big, scary seemingly unattainable goals. A coach is educated and understands exactly what you need to do to get you that goal. A coach will walk you through training, race prep and race day until you cross that finish line with a nice shiny number next to your name.

Reason #2: You want to start running, don’t know where to start, and don't know how to keep it up.

Most people, myself included, start running as a side gig that they don’t always tell people about because they don’t think that their jog around the block qualifies them as a runner. Let me just say it loudly right now: IF YOU RUN, YOU ARE A RUNNER. That being said, a run coach can help you integrate running into your life. You are an individual, and your run tactics should be too.

Reason #3: You have way too many balls in the air at all times and want to run, but can’t manage one more thought.

This is personally one of my top reasons for hiring a run coach. As a Mom of three young kids I wanted my running to be fun and not stressful. I wanted someone to just tell me what to do. Having a coach allows you to spend your energy enjoying the running journey instead of stressing over it.

Reason #4: You want to find the joy in the race.

Racing is stressful, and anxiety-producing, and grueling, and exhausting…and it can be fun. When I first decided to run a race after having kids I was so excited, but also so nervous. I did all of the training on my own. I got to race morning with hopes of a certain goal, not even knowing if it was actually attainable. I was extra nervous and stressed, because I really wanted that goal. I left the race feeling bummed that day. Not because of my time, but because I didn’t enjoy it. And that made me mad. I decided that the next race I ran, I was going to hire a coach. And it worked. Not only did I reach the PR I wanted but more importantly, I felt confident the morning of the race, trusted my training, and truly enjoyed the race. Of course those last few miles were still a struggle, but having a coach allowed me the joy I wanted in the journey.

Reason #5: Accountability.

I hesitate putting this one on here because it feels hard to find the joy in running if you aren’t in a place to actually want to do it. I have seasons where I don’t want any accountability, because accountability adds stress. And that’s okay. But, if you do want to run, and just need a buddy - someone to give you that push, to tell you how amazing you are, to keep you determined and motivated - well a coach is the perfect person for the job.

My point:

Coaching is about so much more than just fast running.
