Call me crazy, but running is so great. The thing though is you have to get over the hump of hatred. The idea of running always sounds great, but after that initial excitement wears off, just when things start to become a little too real, it gets hard and some might even say horrible. But if you can move through that, I promise the reward on the other side is fabulous.
Tips to get running:
Keep it Simple
The running and the plan. Running does not have to be complicated, especially as a beginner. Get out the door, keep it easy and that’s it.
Consistency > Perfection
Not every run is going to feel good or go according to plan. But that’s how it works. It’s better to get out there and do a 10 minute half-run than it is to force yourself into a perfectly planned 45 minute forced excursion that leaves you annoyed.
Follow a Plan
Don’t reinvent the wheel. There are plenty of plans out there that take the thinking out of it and get you running appropriately to avoid burnout or injury.
Prepare
Prep all the things the night before, even if you aren’t running first thing in the morning. Lay your clothes out, prep the coffee, anything to make sure you are fully ready to go and have fewer excuses when the time comes.
Fuel your runs
Eat something before every single run. Even a short “easy” one. Not only is it what your body needs to actually do the work, but it will make the run more enjoyable because it won’t feel as hard.
Shoes
Get the good running shoes. Go to a running store and have them fit you. This is the place to spend your money.
Walk/Run
I’m gonna tell you a secret - even advanced runners walk sometimes. The best way to get into running is with run/walk intervals. Plans exist for that too, so make it easy on yourself and find one to follow.
Tips to Stay Running:
Accountability
This doesn’t mean you have to find someone to keep you rigid, but a buddy who gets you excited to stay consistent is helpful. Or if you would rather do it on your own, print out a calendar or a list that you can cross off/check off and get that little hit of dopamine accomplishment for every run you do.
Playlist/Podcast
Get a hype playlist, or follow someone else’s. Find a podcast that you never get the chance to listen to otherwise. Just something that fills your cup and gets you excited.
Realistic goals
Setting both progress goals (run 3x/week) and end goals (run a 5k) will help you stay excited and motivated. But if the goal is not realistic it can quickly become a downer and discourage you.
Fun clothes
Love some athletic wear. Get some gear that is fun, comfortable and gets you excited to put it on.
Tie it to something you enjoy
Always start or end your run with something you enjoy, such as a cup of coffee, a certain playlist, a text to a friend.. anything that is small and feels enjoyable to you.
Try my selfie trick
Take a before and after selfie and see the difference. And then see all of the selfies next to each other. It’s a fun and easy way to visually track your progress and feel proud of all that you have done.
Call yourself a runner
If you put the shoes on, and get out the door (or on the treadmill) you are a runner. Pace, distance, walk breaks.. none of that matters. Talk to yourself like you are a runner, because you are one.
Don't forget, the hump of hatred exists for all of us.
But keep going, there is so much waiting for you on the other side.
