Don't mind me, just sitting at the kitchen table drinking my pre-run coffee, reading my book - when my brother enters the room and says "headed out for a run in the rain, huh?". Okay first of all, I didn't know it was raining. Second of all, is the treadmill available? No. Well then yes, yes I am.
It wasn't raining hard, so I didn't change much about my plans, but I did braid my hair. Running in the rain (not a storm, safety please) can actually feel super refreshing if you are prepared for it, and if you have the right mindset. Follow these tips to help you run more comfortably, even while wet.
Tips for Running in the Rain
Wear quick-drying fabrics
The bottom line is that you are going to get wet, but the rain mixed with sweat will make you feel colder than the current temperature. Quick-drying fabrics will give you the most breathing room.
Layer, especially if it's cold, but don't overdress
If it's cold out, make sure you are wearing layers. Should the rain stop you could take off an outer layer, or at the least keep some of the drench off of your skin.
But don't overdress! Just because it's raining does not necessarily mean that you need an extra layer. If it's a summer rain, you're still fine in your short sleeve shirt.
You don't want to over-heat.
Wear a water-resistant outer layer
A water-resistant outer layer will keep some of that drench off of you, and keep you warmer in cold weather.
Use a brimmed hat or sunglasses
A brimmed hat or sunglasses will keep the rain from your eyes. Just make sure you aren't hindering your ability to see if it is darker/foggy etc.
Make sure you are visible
Rainy conditions will make it harder for cars to see you. Plan accordingly and wear bright colored clothing, a light up vest, or some good reflectors. Safety first.
Braid or bun your hair
I learned this one the hard way. A regular ponytail in the rain will end in a rats nest. Braid or bun your hair so it doesn't become a tangled mess out there.
Wear good socks and gloves
Your feet are going to get nice and wet. Cotton socks will likely stay wet longer, rub more and cause more discomfort. Try out some water wicking socks.
Your fingers may get colder quicker than normal being out in the rain, a simple pair of gloves will do the trick.
Put your phone in a zip lock bag
This is a completely necessary game changer. I had my phone in a plastic bag throughout a run where it was completely down pouring and not only was I able to use my phone flashlight for the entire run, my phone was completely dry at the end.
Last but not least, be careful out there and celebrate that you are badass enough to run in the rain. And enjoy the refreshing feeling of not minding the rain on your skin.
Happy Running!
